Magical Ru- loving the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is… magical. There is a wild gentleness to Him, soft and yet uncontainably strong. He listens to us as though our roles are reversed, and we’re the one with something important to say. Ru* is wind, mysterious and playful. Yet this freest of spirits stops and stills Himself to savor us in delight.

How He loves us! I remember the first time I ever tangibly felt His hug: it was as though every molecule of my being was surrounded by a warm blanket of deep, molten affection. I didn’t begin to understand how all-encompassing God’s love actually is until that moment.

Ru’s power is exponentially multiplied by his unpredictability. I wouldn’t try to play chess with him: He’d casually pull off a brilliant, never before seen legendary gambit with a wink and a smile. How he must confound the enemy!

What creative genius is His: continually making, remaking, renewing, restoring, creating, recreating, and evolving everything he sweeps past, simply by being. You can only imagine what incredible force His intention wields when He’s actually trying. And yet, every movement, every brush across our consciousness, every whispered word of encouragement is all deeply and lovingly purposeful.

He’s continual motion and yet perpetual presence. He’s radiantly pure and yet He stays through our deepest darkness. He’s the sharp truth that cuts and the gentle balm that comforts. He’s quiet and gentle and yet a firestorm of irresistible power. He’s inconceivably beyond us, but nearer than our own soul. He’s the Paradox that breaks every box and shatters every limitation.

If you wish to understand Ru’s nature, just contemplate the sweet adoration of Father God for His obedient Son Jesus, and the trusting devotion of the Son for His Loving Abba Father. Ru inhabits that Love and radiates it out to all of Creation, inviting us all to partake in the wonder of God’s affection. This Love is His nature and His luminous beauty, and if you have Jesus as Your Saviour, this is the wonder that inhabits your soul.

*Ru is my nickname for the Holy Spirit, short for Ruach, the Hebrew word for Spirit.
